The Butterfly Effect is a powerful concept developed by the late Prof. Edward Lorenz, an American metrologist & mathematician, Harvard University graduate, and MIT researcher.
The term often emphasizes the outsize significance of minute occurrences as in the 1990 movie ‘Havana,’ the protagonist, a gambler with a knack for math, proclaims that “a butterfly can flutter its wings over a flower in China and cause a hurricane in the Caribbean.”
Prof. Lorenz’s core idea was that little variances in the initial condition of a system could have profound and widely divergent effects on the system’s future outcomes. His idea became the basis for a branch of mathematics known as chaos theory.
